Community of Friends – Abuzz
I love being in a classroom that is a buzz with engagement and activity. Kids are playing with each other, side by side, in pairs, or alone. There are conversations and questions and negotiations happening in all areas of the classroom. And yes it looks a bit or very messy. But learning is happening. Just the way it is authentically supposed to. Each child learning what he or she is uniquely ready to learn at that moment.
Allow the children to show you how capable and competent they really are.
Why does giving them more autonomy lead to the best outcomes for all?
Builds confidence.
Develops executive functioning skills - self regulation, planning, prioritizing stimuli, etc.
Helps them find their place in a community.
Allows them to take risks and experience success, failure, disappointment, and eventually develop the resilience that we all need to walk through life's ups and downs.
Happiness can be found in nurturing these relationships.
Feeling of connectedness. If each of your students walks away feeling connected...feeling seen, heard and valued as competent learners then you have done a great job.
If children are excited about school and learning and feel that it is a good and safe place to spend time, then you have mastered your craft.
