Less Stuff Less Stress
I don't know who needs to hear this, but we can all live with a bit less "stuff" and thrive just fine. We live in a culture of excess and marketing often guilts us into making purchases that we are told will make our lives better.
The "stuff" needs to serve us - help us meet our own goals. When it comes to toys and other play items - some outcomes we may be seeking are: Engaging children for periods of time. Nurturing imagination and creativity. Or Encouraging development of their interests.
If the "stuff" is not "doing" what you want, then it is completely fine to remove it from your space - trash, donate, pass along to friends or family, or sell.
Consider changing your mindset:
You no longer need to purchase and maintain a household full of toys, puzzles, books, and craft supplies. And the truth is that too many of these things in a house often leads to clutter and stress for both children and adults.
How to cut your toy collection in half
Start with a quick decluttering - removing play items and books with low play value
broken, missing parts
too big for space
outgrown
to old for your child (may choose to keep in storage for later use)
never was or no longer interested in
most items with batteries or technology (especially of children under 6)
ones that do the play for them
ones that can only be used in one particular way
art kits that have to be assembled in one particular way
toys that claim to teach your child something
keep a donation bin or bag near your door so it becomes a routine activity
If playful learning and creativity are outcomes that you are seeking for your children,
Here a few ways to achieve those outcomes on a budget:
Use your Public Library - borrow books and other items, use the Museum passes, participate in their FREE programs
Spend time outside - at a local park or playground, at a local farm, or in your backyard
Swap play items with family members or friends - Host a TOY/ BOOK Swap Party!
Use consignment or thrift stores or garage sales
Participate in free art experiences
