Choosing Toys with High Play Value

As the holiday season approaches, you may wonder how to choose the best toys.  We thought we'd share a few quick videos that we made a few years back that shared some tips for selecting toys and materials that nurture creativity and wonder.  When children have access to toys with high play value, it is easier for them to let go of the lesser used toys.

Other ideas that are not "toys"

  • memberships

  • classes or lessons

  • plan a museum visit or tour several museums

  • coupons for special time together at home - baking, walking/ hiking, biking, playing a game, etc.

  • ingredients / supplies for a special recipe to make together

  • experiences - show/ movie, bowling, ice skating, swimming, woodworking class,  restaurant of their choice, behind the scenes visit to fire station or farm (nurture the child's interests)

  • plan a visit to an animal shelter - if the child loves animals

  • items specifically for a trip / sports activity - camping, going to a local free beach

  • art supplies (not kits, just supplies)

  • practical gifts - PJs, piggy bank

  • library card

  • create a scavenger hunt around your home using what you already have (this will take a bit of time and creativity)

  • when the child is old enough - a family heirloom (it could be anything that is important to the person it reminds you of and the child)

  • decor for their room (their choice)
