Four Components for a Functional Kid’s Space
Some questions to consider when thinking about creating a functional home with your family - specific to children's items - but can be applied to other areas of your home.
Mindset
What are my goals for my family and the space that we live in?
What do I believe about my own abilities to create, maintain, and function within this space?
How do I want my children to use this space and the contents?
Outflow
Do I declutter things that we no longer need, want, can use, or love?
Inflow
How often do I purchase new or used toys, clothes, equipment, etc. for my children?
How often do others give toys, clothes, equipment, etc (gifts) to my children?
Systems
Do I have a home or zones for each of my children's items (clothes, toys, craft materials, equipment, etc.)?
Are the "homes" where things are used? practical and functional
Do my family members know where the things belong and can easily put them there?
Do I use a toy rotating system?
Do my family members help with tidying? and laundry?
Do I have a system of regular decluttering on an ongoing, monthly, or bi-annual basis?
Do I have a morning and night time routine that supports my goals for my family?
Does each child have a "My Treasures box" and a "Memory Box"?
The answers to these questions will change over the different seasons of your life. They are just guides to help to keep things moving forward when life gets complicated, as it often does.
