Joy is a choice

We work in a challenging field, but that doesn't mean that it has to feel that way every day...all day long.   And if it does, perhaps this is the year you will choose a different path for how you approach your work with children.

It is your mindset that I am talking about.  Choosing a thoughtful approach over a reactive approach.  And finding a sliver or a whole basketful of joyful moments everyday.

Leaning in to truly observing how the children are using your space, playing with each other (in pairs or small groups) as well as alone (focusing on a particular interest or task), finding a way to celebrate their own accomplishments, and feeling safe to explore and learn what they are uniquely ready to learn.

If you are constantly dealing with dysregulation in children or feeling stressed by your workflow.  Consider adjusting your routines, systems and overall environments to function better for you and the children.

If you have accepted that you are unhappy with your circumstances, then change starts with observation.

A few observations to begin the process:

Does your space feel cluttered? If so, what can you remove today to make it feel less cluttered?

Watch how the children move throughout the space - for example: if you have a child that likes to run...are there lengths of open floor space that makes it easy for him to do that; or if you have kids that like to stand while they do their art projects... is there space around a work table for children to stand or move naturally vs. many chairs that get in their way and are often unwanted because they prefer to stand.

Notice whether or not the materials, tools, supplies are placed in areas where they are naturally being used - Are you taking extra time and steps to get items from one storage area to where the item is actually used?

How is the rhythm of the day? Do activities naturally flow from one to another? Have you allowed for flexibility for children that require more time to complete a task of interest?

There will always be things to observe...as you stop to take a fresh look at your environment, routine, and individual students, make small changes and find the right fit for you.

Everyday will not go as you plan but if you create an environment that feels less overwhelming for you and your children then you will be better able to manage those moments.
