You Can’t Thrive in Clutter
The other day, a mom commented that I'd been writing about other "stuff like clutter", implying that it didn't have anything to do with play or education ...which is the focus of The Wonder Room.
The truth is the clutter that I'm talking about does exist in homes and classrooms and so it does have a lot to do with how children play and learn in these spaces on a regular basis.
You can't thrive in clutter....
Just as we are challenged to focus when we are exposed to a large volume of stuff - physical items or visual clutter or mental over thinking...so are children.
If you feel overwhelmed by all your kids' stuff, then your kids may feel that overwhelm as well.
Perhaps it is because you have TOO MANY or TOO MUCH, whatever the reason the clutter makes it hard for children to focus for long enough periods of time to learn or stay engaged.
Whether in your home or in the classroom, the space should be organized in such a way that it is functional for all those who occupy it.
The goal is not Pinterest perfect.
"A space really only needs two things in order to be organized. Every item in that space needs to have a home (and members of your household who use that item need to know where that home is!) and the space needs to make you smile." Laura from Get Organized HQ
I'll keep talking about decluttering as it relates to families and how we all function within American culture.
